Best Place to Buy Guns — Safe, Legal & Trusted Options

Focus keyphrase: best place to buy guns

Looking for the best place to buy guns? Whether you’re a first‑time buyer or an experienced shooter, the right purchase starts with safety, legality, and trust. This guide walks you through the top places to buy firearms, what to check before you buy, and how to stay compliant with local laws — so you get the right gun, legally and responsibly.

Top Places to Buy Guns

1. Local Licensed Gun Stores (FFLs)

  • Why choose them: Immediate hands‑on inspection, expert staff, range demos (where available), and local service/repairs.

  • Benefits: You can examine fit, finish, and function in person, get professional advice, and complete background checks/transfer paperwork on site.

2. Pawn Shops & Sporting Goods Retailers

  • Why choose them: Often carry budget and used options; convenient locations.

  • What to watch for: Inspect used guns carefully for wear, corrosion, and proper function; verify service history where possible.

3. Gun Shows

  • Why choose them: Wide selection, competitive pricing, and access to private sellers and dealers.

  • What to watch for: Federal and state transfer rules still apply; always verify the seller is licensed when required and request documented history when appropriate.

4. Reputable Online Retailers (with FFL Transfer)

  • Why choose them: Larger inventory and better chances to find specific models or deals.

  • How it works: Buy online, ship to a local Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) who conducts the required background check and transfer.

  • Tip: Confirm FFL handling fees and transfer policies before purchasing.

5. Private Sales (Varies by State)

  • Why choose them: May be an option in some states for used firearms.

  • Important: Laws vary widely — many states require background checks or FFL transfers for private sales. Always follow your state and local law.

What to Check Before Buying a Gun

  • Legal compliance: Age limits, permits, waiting periods, and background check requirements vary. Check state and local laws first.

  • Serial number & provenance: Make sure the firearm has a clear serial number and legitimate documentation if buying used.

  • Function & safety: Inspect barrel, action, and safety mechanisms; test the trigger and cylinder/bolt function when safe to do so.

  • Ammunition compatibility: Verify the exact caliber or gauge stamped on the barrel.

  • Accessories & transfer costs: If buying online, factor in FFL transfer fees, shipping, and any additional taxes.

  • Return policy & warranty: Know the seller’s policies for returns, repairs, and manufacturer warranties.

Safe Storage & Responsible Ownership

Buying a gun responsibly includes safe storage and training:

  • Gun safe or certified lockbox — choose a robust, rated safe for long‑term storage.

  • Trigger or cable locks — use a secondary safety device when storing or transporting.

  • Training & range time — get professional instruction if you’re new to firearms.

  • Insurance & documentation — consider adding firearms to your homeowner/renter policy and keep receipts and serial numbers in a secure file.

FAQ — Best Place to Buy Guns

Q: What is the safest place to buy a gun?
A: A licensed local gun dealer (FFL) is often the safest — you can inspect the firearm, get expert advice, and complete required paperwork and background checks in one place.

Q: Can I buy a gun online and have it shipped to my home?
A: No. Federal law requires long guns and handguns purchased online to be shipped to a licensed FFL dealer, who completes the transfer and background check. Always confirm the seller’s shipping and FFL transfer process.

Q: Do I need a permit to purchase a gun?
A: It depends on your state. Some states require purchase permits, waiting periods, or permits to carry. Check your state and local regulations before purchasing.

Q: Is buying from a private seller legal?
A: Private sale rules vary by jurisdiction. In many places private transfers require an FFL transfer or background check. Always comply with local law to avoid penalties.

Q: How do I know if a used gun is safe?
A: Have the firearm inspected by a qualified gunsmith or a reputable dealer. Look for headspace issues, bore condition, cracked frames/receivers, and worn parts.

Q: Where should I store my gun?
A: In a secure, locked gun safe or certified lockbox out of reach of children and unauthorized users. Use additional locking devices when transporting.

Final Notes & Legal Reminder

The best place to buy guns is a place that emphasizes legal compliance, safety, and transparency. Laws vary significantly by state and locality — always verify current legal requirements where you live. If you’re unsure, consult a licensed firearms dealer or local law enforcement for guidance.

True Response,They sent me an email that a revolver I was looking for came in a taurus 627 and the price was resonable compared to others,I thought there shipping and handling fee was alittle higher than most but ordered the gun, started reading more reviews and was alittle reluctant after I ordered.Anyways after I ordered about 10 hrs later.ready for shipping, the next day it shipped, and in 2 more days it was ready for pickup at my dealers. So I was very pleased, fast shipping and no problems at all, havent shot it yet but I had great service.will buy again.Greatly appreciated Feedyourguns.com

ive been looking for a Kimber Rimfire pistol... out of production, hard to find! feedyourguns had one,  The process could not have been easier... the whole process including shipping probably took less time than it does to buy a gun instore at Cabelas.. ha... ha... deffinetly less frustrating. Highly recommend "feedyourguns.com

Bought these for the 12 pellet load. Works well in my Winchester pump, but because they are a bit longer than US shells at 2.5 in, one less fits the magazine tube. Kicks about 33% more than 9 pellet buck due to 33% more mass heading down range. Nice spread at 10 yards. Absolutely shreds basketball sized hole. Feed your guns gets these to your door in a couple days.

These are my favorite buckshot rounds for Saiga or Vepr-12 shotguns. FULL power, and consistent spread out of these guns of just under 1" per yard: approximately 12" at 15 yards, and 18" at 20 yards. I shoot these and the S & B 12 pellet load, and I notice a distinct difference in sound, recoil, and consistent spread. The S & B loads are rated at 100fps less than these and it shows.

Wow.
Great round. Gives about a 20" spread at 20 yards from my Mossberg 500.
Shells a bit longer, but still can get 5 in the tube.
With the extra pellets there is little gap in the pattern. Even at 40 yards it still put 4 pellets through a man sized 1/2" sheet of plywood.

Fast service - ordered on a Sunday, received on Wednesday. Loaded in 2 Mossberg 500's and 2 Remington 870's, incl. a TAC-14. All took the standard basic load despite the Nobel rounds being slightly longer; all loaded, extracted, & ejected normally (unfired). I measured Remington 12 ga 00 buck at 2 5/16" overall, Wolf - 2 7/16", and these Nobel at 2 1/2" overall. This for rounds designated 2 3/4". Would buy again.
